Course Description: Deepen your cultural knowledge and gain new Spanish skills through this enjoyable exploration of the infectious rhythms of Puerto Rican music!
Intermediate students who are familiar with speaking in the present and past tenses will learn about the fascinating history and culture of Puerto Rico by exploring the development of its folk and popular musical genres and dance styles. This highly interactive class will give you the chance to strengthen your communicative skills through such activities as doing research and presenting your findings, analyzing lyrics to representative songs, and enjoying stimulating class discussion as you become familiar with the musical expressions of Puerto Rico’s rich multicultural heritage.
Puerto Rican Tierra instructor Michelle Dieppa Perea will draw on her training in dance and love of music to provide students with an authentic introduction to her country’s musical styles. A broad range of resources including song recordings, visual aids, articles, and videos will provide stimuli for discussion in this unique and participative cultural immersion course.
