Course Description: In this highly interactive cultural immersion course, Intermediate students will deepen their cultural understanding while improving their Spanish skills by reading and discussing legends from pre-hispanic Mexican cultures. Representing a rich and fascinating literary inheritance, these ancient stories provide an excellent point of departure for gaining insight into the way of life and culture of the native peoples of Mexico.
In each class session, students will together analyze the messages and themes of the stories read, as well as refine their understanding of the vocabulary and structures used in the texts. Through this fascinating exploration of pre-hispanic mythology, students will discover emblematic landmarks, cultural icons, and elements of Mexican identity. The reading assignments will be complemented with visual aids and student research to paint a nuanced picture of the lives and values of the cultures studied. With stimulating class discussion that will encourage students to hone their Spanish speaking and comprehension skills, this course offers a depth of cultural learning that is unique and won’t be soon forgotten!
Best suited for: Students who have completed at least Spanish Intermediate 2 or equivalent. Recommended for Intermediate students.
