Advanced Short Story Seminar: Chicano Voices

Course Description: In this unique seminar-style course, students will gain insight into Mexican-American culture and identity by exploring short stories by written by Mexican-American authors themselves. We will enjoy reading and discussing stories in their original Spanish form by some of the most  acclaimed Chicano authors such as Miguel Méndez, Rosaura Sánchez, Tomás Rivera, Sabine Ulibarrí, Rolando Hinojosa among many others.

The short stories chosen represent the diverse experiences and rich cultural identity shared by those whose lives and heritage have roots on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. They encompass universal themes as the characters in each story struggle in their own way to find community, love, home, safety, and understanding, and the culturally specific language and social context will be compelling for  anyone interested in understanding Mexican-American culture in more depth. In a time when identities can be weaponized and the topics of immigration and deportation are hotly debated in civil discourse, taking time to read and consider Mexican-American literature and perspectives can be a small act of solidarity.

Designed for advanced students, this course will provide you an opportunity to discover fascinating literature, expand your vocabulary and reading comprehension skills, and enjoy stimulating and lively discussion.

Best suited for: Students who have previously completed at least the Intermediate 6 level or been recommended Advanced courses.
