Course Description: In this 6-class cultural immersion course, students will enjoy the opportunity to discover new words, metaphors, ideas, and perspectives of life in the Spanish language through a selected sample of short poems written by Mexican authors from different time periods.
Our poetry exploration will include a wide range of styles and themes, as we examine the poetic word of centuries past and contemporary literature. We’ll first explore the poetry of Nezahualcoyotl, the great philosopher, warrior, architect, poet and king of the pre-hispanic Mexican city-state Texcoco and works by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, known in her lifetime as the “Tenth muse”, who during Mexico’s colonial period critiqued the misogyny and oppression of the world that surrounded her. After our exposure to some poetry of the early periods of Mexican literature, we will move onto contemporary works by some of the most representative poets of modern Mexico, such as Ramón Lopez Velarde, Xavier Villaurrutia, Rosario Castellanos, Jaime Sabines, Briseida Cuevas Cob, Irma Pineda, Jose Emilio Pacheco, Efraín Huerta, among others.
Designed for higher intermediate students with a strong desire to improve their diction and gain valuable practice in thinking in Spanish, expand their vocabulary, and enjoy stimulating discussion with other enthusiastic students. All reading materials will be provided in class.
Best suited for: Students with higher intermediate or advanced conversational skills
