Course Description: In this highly-interactive seminar-style course, students will enjoy the opportunity to read and discuss the novel “Señales que precederán al fin del mundo” written by one of the most promising contemporary Mexican writers, Yuri Herrera (Actopan, 1970). In only slightly more than 100 pages, Herrera is able to construct a profound story, surprising readers by how much meaning it conveys despite its brevity and simplicity.
Señales que precederán al fin del mundo is the story of the journey of Makina, a young woman on a quest to find her brother, who immigrated to the United States, and give him a message she promised her mother she’d deliver.
This will become the beginning of a revelatory and mysterious journey between two worlds separated by an infamous border. Through Makina’s eyes we’ll gain a new understanding of crossing, not precisely the physical territorial division between two countries but the crossing of identities, cultures, and it may seem at times, the crossing between the world of the living and of the dead. All narrated in Herrera’s beautiful, precise prose infused with the slang used by the people on both sides of the border.
Designed for students with advanced or high intermediate reading and speaking skills in Spanish, this course will give you the opportunity to continue polishing your comprehension and conversational skills while we embark on this literary adventure that will deepen our insight of this barren and unwelcoming region where south and north converge and which side of the border you come from shapes your path and destiny.
Best suited for: Students who’ve previously completed Intermediate 6 or an Advanced course or been recommended an Advanced course.
