September 2018 - Gissel García

Brimming with passion and enthusiasm, Gissel’s natural charisma injects positive energy into any class she joins. Of Mexican-American heritage, she was motivated to take classes to be able to connect with Spanish-speaking family and friends on a deeper level. Enrolling in both a morning intensive and evening once-weekly course simultaneously, she’s taken on polishing her advanced Spanish skills as a serious priority and is inspired to refine her vocabulary and use of Spanish structures. Currently working on creating a health and wellness blog, she has begun writing content in Spanish and plans to make her website fully bilingual. We’re delighted Gissel happened upon Tierra and graces us with her presence, we look forward to seeing where her projects take her!

1) Why are you studying Spanish?

"I have always felt that Spanish is a beautiful and poetic language.  Most importantly, I am studying Spanish so that I can have deeper and more meaningful conversations with my Spanish-speaking family and friends in the U.S. and in México.  I am also working on a health & wellness education website that I would like to offer in both English & Spanish (Roots of a Feather // Hasta la Raíz), so I’d like to improve not just my conversational skills, but my writing skills as well".  

2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?

"My favorite part about Tierra is the people I have met in my classes and learning about the work that they do in the community.  Tierra brings together a diverse group of people and the conversations in class are always thought-provoking and leave me inspired and excited to keep learning. I have been wanting to take conversational Spanish classes for years and was too afraid to! I'm really happy I stumbled upon Tierra and appreciate the fun and welcoming environment they have created".

3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here? 

"My Dad and I have started texting each other in Spanish. :P
I also started writing content in Spanish for my health & wellness site and am working on translating some of my English content into Spanish".
