October 2024 - Gianna Mercadante

Full of enthusiasm for learning Spanish, Gianna has made massive progress during her time at Tierra - she started at the Beginner 4 level in 2022 and is currently in Intermediate 6! Passionate about education and learning in general, in her work she designs online courses for higher education. Thoughtful and analytical, she engages deeply with the language, delving into details and nuances, and asking pointed questions that enhance everyone’s understanding. Friendly and welcoming, she builds strong connections with her classmates and contributes to creating a positive group dynamic in any class she joins. We are honored to count Gianna as part of our amazing student community and look forward to continuing to see her advance towards fluency.

1) Why are you studying Spanish?

"I love people and learning! And I love that Spanish allows me to communicate with different people, learn about new cultures, and expand my community. I also love how language influences how people think about and talk about the world. Learning Spanish has given me many new perspectives, and I think this helps me to be a more empathetic, curious, and observant person".

2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?

"I really enjoy having small classes and learning with other students and our wonderful teachers. Each class feels like a small and supportive learning community".

3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?

"When I was working at a high school recently, I chatted with a students' Hispanic parents that had come to the school. We had a joyful conversation, and I was able to share with them how their child was doing in school and answer their questions. I was really happy to be able to talk with them and get to know them".
