Nancy is an exceptional student of Spanish, unceasingly dedicated to honing her communication skills and fascinated by all things Latin American. Her warmth and compassion lead to her take every opportunity to reach out to native-speakers, eager to form meaningful relationships and learn from others’ approaches to life. In her travels she’s chosen the less trodden path, seeking authentic experiences and immersing herself completely in Spanish while building lasting friendships with locals. Perhaps most notable in her language-learning trajectory is Nancy’s voracious appetite for reading in Spanish - armed with a dictionary, pen, and highlighter, Nancy revels in the challenge of understanding written Spanish and deepening her cultural knowledge through literature. With such zest and commitment, we feel lucky to count Nancy as part of the Tierra community.
Name: Nancy Bouwsma
Occupation: Retired
Time Studying at Tierra: 2 1/2 years
1) Why are you studying Spanish?
"Three reasons: first is to be able to communicate with people on trips to Spanish speaking places and be more independent in my travels. Second is to communicate with Spanish speakers right here in Oregon. And third is because studying Spanish is great exercise for the aging brain! Also, I think learning a second language promotes empathy and understanding in the bigger world."
2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?
"I am shy and self-conscious when trying my Spanish out loud. In our private conversation hours, Elyse makes me feel comfortable and encourages me, and corrects just enough of my mistakes to challenge, but not discourage. I enjoy telling about real experiences instead of rote exercises from a grammar book. The small group classes are great too for the opportunity to share and practice, to listen and ask questions. Also, Tierra has done a good job in placing me in the right class for my level."
3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?
"My husband and I traveled to Baja Sur in December, 2010, and to Panama in February, 2012. On both trips I was able to get us on the right buses to travel to out of the way places where little English was spoken. I can ask for directions, order food, shop and even carry on a conversation with native speakers. Knowing some Spanish makes the travel experience so much richer."
Congratulations Nancy!!
