May 2022 - John Preston

After beginning his studies at Tierra in the summer intersession of 2020, John has enrolled in a Spanish course in every term since. Impressively dedicated to his studies, he is committed to practicing his Spanish skills daily by reading and listening to Spanish-language content. He deeply engages with the course material and never shies away from a challenge, demonstrating particular interest in the most nuanced usages of the language, the most demanding reading assignments. Exuding warmth and empathy, John’s jovial nature renders him a highly esteemed classmate whose presence is enjoyed by all. We are grateful to count John among our student community at Tierra and look forward to continuing to see him dive deep into the learning process, setting an inspiring example of what retirement can look like!

Name: John Preston
Occupation: Retired (full time grandfather)
Time Studying at Tierra: 2 years

1) Why are you studying Spanish?

"I first studied Spanish in the Army more than 50 years ago, and I wanted to improve the little I know and remember.  I also want to show my kids and grandkids that learning is a lifelong activity and that old dogs can learn new tricks!"

2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?

"I so enjoy the discussions and learning of others’ experiences and points of view.  The instructors I’ve had - Laura, Elyse, Cynthia - have such a positive and encouraging attitude towards everyone."

3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?

"I listen to programs in Spanish every day and I read something in Spanish every day.  I take the initiative whenever I can to speak with hispanohablantes.  Now that we’re out of the covid danger zone, I’m looking forward to more travel."

¡Felicidades John!
