June 2017 - Ken Houseman

Deeply committed to his Spanish studies, Ken has made his classes at Tierra a top priority, often enrolling in two courses simultaneously. Perhaps his background in computer science and business inform his focused and methodological approach, one which is lightened with an infectious sense of humor and an invariably positive attitude. Inspired to learn Spanish in part to honor his partner’s family of Mexican heritage, Ken is also passionate about travel and has visited many Spanish-speaking countries, most recently, Cuba. He revels in the social aspect of small-group classes, building strong connections with his classmates and helping to create a truly supportive and dynamic atmosphere. We are delighted to count Ken as part of our community at Tierra and look forward to continuing to see him race toward his fluency goals!

Name: Ken Houseman
Occupation: Director of IT at Nike
Time Studying at Tierra: 8 months

1) Why are you studying Spanish?

"I've tried, and failed, to master another language multiple times.  I've decided to finally conquer the challenge.  I also recognize the importance of the Spanish language to my partner's family.  He is the son of first and second generation (depending on which parent) immigrants from Mexico.  It's the least I can do to show love, support, and gratitude for them.  I also really enjoy South America and traveling there as often as I can."

2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?

"The small classes and fun learning environment has been extremely helpful to me.  Breaking out of the standard academic learning mold has inspired me to keep going when I would have been frustrated in the past."

3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?

"I just got back from Cuba and it was great to be able to communicate with locals and feel more comfortable exploring."

¡Felicidades Ken!
