July 2024 - Lizzy Lawry

With a great sense of humor and profound enthusiasm for learning Spanish, Lizzy brings fun energy and a curious spirit to any Spanish class she joins. Motivated to study Spanish both by her family’s Mexican heritage and her desire to communicate with the Spanish-speaking students she serves as a speech language pathologist in several local schools, Lizzy has been unstoppable since she started studying at Tierra last summer. Her knack for offering unexpected, kind of absurd, and totally hilarious responses helps build camaraderie among her classmates through laughter. We’re delighted to count Lizzy among our amazing student community and look forward to continuing to see her march towards a high level of fluency.

Name: Lizzy Lawry
Occupation: Speech Language Pathologist
Time Studying at Tierra: Since June 2023

1) Why are you studying Spanish?

"I'm studying Spanish for a combination of reasons. My grandma came from Mexico and many of my family members speak Spanish. Also, I work with a lot of Spanish speaking students in my work, so it would definitely help be to be a better clinician. I hope to one day be able to run Special Education Meetings in Spanish instead of using an interpreter. Also, my boyfriend speaks Spanish".

2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?

"I can always find a class that fits my schedule and all of my instructors have been fabulous. I like that there is homework without the pressure of a grade attached to it. It helps with practice but isn't super time consuming".

3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?

"I actually did my first speech therapy session in mostly Spanish (given with a monolingual Spanish speaking 3 year old with a language delay) a few months ago. Her mom and dad helped out when I didn't know a word and we all worked together to make a really enriching play-therapy experience with the child. Turns out you can do a lot of play with -hay vacas-, -moooo tengo sueño- and -va a comer heno en el granero-".

¡Felicidades Lizzy!
