An inspiring example of what can be achieved when one pursues a goal with determination, Martha started her Spanish studies in a Beginner 1 course at Tierra in the fall of 2021 and in less than two years has attained solidly high intermediate skills. A retired violist who played with the Oregon Symphony for decades (as well as a talented photographer), Martha brings an artist’s discerning eye and discipline to her Spanish studies, meticulously analyzing the material learned and delighting in the nuances of the language. Soft-spoken and gentle, she is a kind and compassionate classmate who makes building community in online classes seem natural. She is currently preparing for a trip to Mexico next month where she’ll spend time in Mexico City and do an intensive Spanish immersion program in Oaxaca. We are honored to count Martha among our amazing community of Tierra students and look forward to seeing her continue to blossom as a Spanish speaker.
Name: Martha Warrington
Occupation: Retired musician, after a 35-year career with the Oregon Symphony.
Time Studying at Tierra: I began studying in the Beginner I class in September, 2021.
1) Why are you studying Spanish?
"I hear more and more Spanish being spoken in our communities, and began studying Spanish as a way to be able to connect with my Spanish-speaking neighbors and to show respect for them. I also love traveling in Latin America, and knowing Spanish adds another layer of ease and fun to that experience. Lately, as I am beginning to become more comfortable speaking Spanish, I am interested in finding volunteer opportunities working with Spanish-speaking immigrants and/or children.".
2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?
"There are many things I appreciate about my studies at Tierra! I am happy with my teacher, who has been available for all of my foundational grammar classes. I enjoy the sense of community that has developed with the other students within our classes. I'm also grateful for the office staff, who have always been helpful and responsive with any questions or adjustments that I've requested help with."
3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?
"I did have an unexpected conversation in Spanish with a worker in Costco who said hello to me in Spanish! I am looking forward to an upcoming trip to Mexico later this summer, where my goal is to speak Spanish during the whole two weeks I will be there.".
¡Felicidades Martha!
