Name: Mary Laughlin
Occupation: Retired Teacher
Time at Tierra: Since Sept. 2012

1) Why are you studying Spanish?

"Basically I would like to get back to the level, and beyond, where I was when I left Spain 40 years ago after 13 months of immersion in Sevilla. Unfortunately, I rarely used Spanish for the next 32 years! In 2005 I began to travel to Mexico and found that, while pretty rusty, my ancient Spanish had not been totally lost. I practiced on my own for several years by reading Spanish newspapers online as well as listening to news videos and an occasional soap opera but was frustrated with my progress and so I decided to enroll at Tierra. I have always loved learning and find that studying another language is a lifetime effort and so the joy of new learning never ceases.  How I wish that I had started formal study sooner!"

2) What is your favorite part of your experience at Tierra?

"There are several aspects of Tierra that I like but one of my favorite things is the opportunity to hear 4 hours a week of fluent, correct Spanish from the excellent instructors, especially when the conversation or reading focuses on Mexican/Latin American history, arts or culture. Interesting and friendly classmates are also a plus!"

3) Can you tell us of a time that you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?

"I know that my ability to read the newspaper and understand news videos has improved and also that the next time I visit Mexico I will be able to understand and speak at a higher level than I did in previous trips."

¡Felicidades Mary!
