A kind and spirited woman, full of curiosity, while Gretchen is a student at Tierra, she has much to teach us. Initially drawn to learn Spanish by her passion for tango dancing, she pursued her studies (of the language and the dance) in many trips to Argentina where she developed a nuanced understanding of both topics. Upon moving to Portland, she quickly became a part of Tierra and made every effort to continue sharpening her skills, complementing group classes with individual private lessons and frequently gracing us with her presence at our holiday fiestas. Her remarkable generosity and insatiable thirst for learning are truly inspiring; one would be hard-pressed to find a more engaged and concerned citizen. We are honored to count Gretchen as part of our community and wish her and all of our students a healthy, happy new year.

1) Why are you studying Spanish?
"I began studying Spanish for the first time in 2004 when I went to study Argentine tango dancing in Buenos Aires. I loved the entire experience! Having spoken other languages, I knew how much of a difference it can make if you speak the language of the country where you are. I listened to CDs in my car and took both group and individual classes in New Jersey where I lived. I went to Buenos Aires on a regular basis for about six years, each time attending Spanish classes and studying tango. In 2010 I led a trip to Buenos Aires, to the wine country in Mendoza and to a holistic center near the Andes - having facility in Spanish helped so much! Then I moved across the country and slacked in my Spanish study until I found Tierra. So, I continue studying Spanish for the pure pleasure of speaking and reading and writing this beautiful language!"
2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?
"I thoroughly enjoy taking both group and individual classes. I appreciate the quality of the instruction and the organization of the class material. I also have enjoyed meeting other students and appreciate the monthly gatherings. I instantly felt “at home” when I first came to Tierra. That’s something no one can create or control but it influences how one participates. Thank you, Tierra!"
3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?
"I haven’t traveled to Buenos Aires since 2010; I have been so immersed in re-creating my life after moving 3,000 miles away from my professional work, home, friends and colleagues. I write in Spanish to my Argentine friends and enjoy watching movies about Spanish-speaking peoples and their experiences. Most recently Norberto had recommended La jaula de oro, a movie about the experience of young people (primarily) who dare to make the trip from Guatemala and Mexico to the U.S. I also have enjoyed reading in Spanish and learning more about the tragic “Dirty War” in Argentina about 35 years ago. I try to speak Spanish whenever I have the opportunity."
¡Felicidades Gretchen!
