March 2013 - Mindy Gramberg

Enamored with the language and Latin American culture, Mindy surrounds herself with Spanish in every way she can - when she’s not planning her next  trip abroad she can be found paging through Spanish-language magazines or enjoying the beats of Latin music. Her travels have included several stints in Spanish immersion programs in which she had the opportunity to work on learning Spanish while exploring Central America and soaking up the cultural experience. A dedicated research nurse who conducts oncology studies, she’s also offered her nursing skills on volunteer trips to Guatemala, providing needed medical services in rural communities. We’re happy to recognize Mindy for her commitment to studying Spanish and determination to broaden her cultural awareness and make a positive impact.

Name: Mindy Gramberg
Occupation: Research Nurse
Time Studying at Tierra: 2 years

1) Why are you studying Spanish?

"I have always loved the sound of Spanish. After taking French for most of my childhood, then a couple years of German, I decided to turn to Spanish.  In 2003 I had the opportunity to travel to Cuba to tour schools and see the art world. I took a basic beginner’s course and then took occasional classes through PCC.  When I came to Tierra, I started traveling more and have taken classes in Costa Rica and Guatemala to further my skills. I've also gone on medical trips to Guatemala and one return trip to Cuba to see my friends there. They all noticed how much my Spanish had improved over the last couple of years."

2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?

"I love the small classes. I'm much more comfortable speaking in this situation (and making mistakes). I also love the cultural aspect that all the staff at Tierra include in the classes."

3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?

"While vacationing in Sayulita, Mexico, we befriended a family that owned a little open-air restaurant right on the beach that we kept eating at. One slow night, the entire family came over and spent at least an hour talking to us only in Spanish. I was so pleased that I could carry on a conversation for that length of time."

Felicidades Mindy!!
