September 2011 - Janice Jenks

Janice Jenks

With a bright smile and contagious enthusiasm, Janice's joyful presence is a real boon to the classroom. Her positive attitude and abundant energy contribute to building a friendly and encouraging atmosphere, and are reflected in her delightful and creative approach to written homework assignments. In offering the gift of Spanish summer camp to both of her children and actively participating in the Tierra community by attending our holiday fiestas with them, Janice embodies our mission at Tierra to bring Spanish language and cultural education to the whole family!

Name: Janice Jenks (Although my classmates know me as "Anita" - my Spanish class alias)
Occupation: Stay at home mom to two young children (ages 4 and 6), volunteer at two schools and the executive board of the PTSA
Time studying at Tierra:  Eight months

1) Why are you studying Spanish?
"I am studying Spanish for so many reasons! I think Spanish is a beautiful language and I hope to live and work in a Spanish-speaking country at some point in my life. We plan on traveling to Central America in the next few months. I think it is important to learn another language (and culture) and want to set an example for my kids, one of lifelong learning. Most importantly, it's fun!"

2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?
"My favorite part about my experience at Tierra has been the people. I appreciate the staff; their kind encouragement and patience have been critical in providing a safe learning environment, one where you can learn from your mistakes. My classmates are inspiring people. We help each other do our personal best, have a friendly competitiveness and aren't afraid to laugh at ourselves."

3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?
"I was lucky to be able to travel to Mexico for a week in March with my family. It was fun to talk to native Spanish speakers, read signs and use what I had learned. One nice man even told me I had a great accent! Thank you Tierra center!"

Congratulations Janice!!
