With an unshakably positive attitude, Corrie approaches her Spanish studies with authentic interest, enthusiasm, and patience. Unafraid to delve into the depths of language and fascinated by the cultural aspects behind linguistic differences, her goal of being able to communicate with people is always apparent. Having already experienced traveling and studying abroad, she is currently preparing for an extended stay in Nicaragua next spring where she'll be working with several community organizations. Corrie represents the spirit of service central to Tierra's mission, a desire to use her abilities and time to have a positive impact on people in need.
Name: Corrie Burdett
Occupation: OMSI - support staff in Finance & Administration
Time Studying at Tierra: Since February 2011
1) Why are you studying Spanish?
"Many new experiences happen when studying another language, and I have been able to experience some of those by studying Spanish and being able to communicate on a deeper level. I love the language and the different cultures I am exposed to by being able to communicate, read, and write. I continue to study Spanish because, as a non-native speaker, there are so many ways to express yourself that don't translate directly into English and I want to be able to accurately
communicate with my friends, host families, and communities by being able to utilize some of the intricacies of the language that explain emotions, feelings, thoughts in, perhaps, a clearer way than English."
2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?
"I really enjoy the small classes at Tierra. It is much easier to get to know your peers and teachers with small groups than in a larger, more classroom like setting. Tierra in and of itself has built a community centered around Spanish language and cultures that is unlike any other place that I have been a part of and it's great to be able to explore language study locally through Tierra."
3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?
"Just the other day I was speaking with a co-worker who speaks Spanish, so I use what I have learned at Tierra at work sometimes. I also use what I have learned when I talk to my host family in Argentina and friends who are here and abroad whose primary language is Spanish. What I have learned at Tierra has made it possible for me to continue to
expand my knowledge of the Spanish language while living in Portland."
Congratulations Corrie!!
