June 2012 - Jacob Lewin

Jacob LewinWith his keen interest in Latino culture and refined sense of humor, Jacob brings fresh perspectives to the Spanish classroom . A retired radio reporter and news director, he continues to do freelance work in radio, often reporting on issues related to hispanics and immigrants and seeking to widen cultural awareness. His wholehearted dedication to giving back to the community can be seen in his volunteer work, tutoring Spanish-speakers with limited educational opportunities in English as a Second Language. A  frequent participant in the ''intercambios'' offered at Multnomah County libraries, Jacob commendably explores every avenue available to practice his language skills and make connections with the Spanish-speaking community.

Name: Jacob Lewin
Occupation: Retired radio reporter and news director.  Still doing freelance work
Time Studying at Tierra: About a year

1) Why are you studying Spanish?

"Pure enjoyment. Ability to communicate when traveling to Spanish-speaking countries. Helps with my volunteer English tutoring. Of some use in my reporting work. Mental exercise."

2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?

"The atmosphere is one of respect but with an element of fun and the teachers and students are delightful."

3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?

"I recently did a radio story about the first district congressional race and the part the Latino vote might play.  While the story was mostly in English, I was able to go to a rally and understand just about all of what was being said by the speakers and that helped me learn about the issue and come up with thoughtful interview questions."

Congratulations Jacob!!
