With a big smile and bubbly enthusiasm, Becky brings joy and purpose to the classroom. A truly community-oriented vision fuels her dedication to learn Spanish in both her professional life, as a public school teacher who goes beyond expectations to form a conversation club with Spanish-speaking mothers of her students, and in her personal life as a seasoned international traveler and volunteer. An adventurous spirit, she has troves of experience and a knack for hilarious storytelling. Becky's passion and community work serve as a wonderful example of what we at Tierra hope to foster and an inspiration to find more ways to get involved.

Name: Becky Wandell
Occupation: 5th Grade Teacher
Time Studying at Tierra: 1-1/2 years

1) Why are you studying Spanish?
"To be able to communicate with others! I teach in a school where many of the families are hispanic and I want to be able to share news with them about their children. I love to travel and I'm especially interested in Latino culture, so it's important to me to understand this beautiful language. Finally, I'm very involved with Heifer International, an organization working around the world to end hunger and poverty by giving livestock and training to families in need. They use the products from these animals to help their family become more healthy an sustainable. (The picture attached is of me at a Heifer Project in Honduras.)"

2) What is your favorite part about your experience here at Tierra?
"I think it's a very well organized school and I feel I'm making progress each week in my studies. I've always been impressed with the quality of professors and the interesting people I meet in my classes. And the new paint-job adds to the relaxing atmosphere!"

3) Can you tell us of a time you have been able to use what you have learned studying here?
"I had my first Spanish (with a little Spanglish) Conference with one of my student's parents the other day when an interpreter wasn't available. It was all up to me and I was very proud of myself after I pulled it off. The mother hugged me for my attempt, and we decided that since she wanted to learn more English as well, we should start our own weekly conversation club. So we did! Me and "my moms"- we're having a ball."

Congratulations Becky!!
