7.3 Connecting phrases

In this last section of the lesson we are going to turn our attention to a particular set of fixed expressions that are especially useful for the type of translations you might be asked to complete at DCS. Conjunctions are words that serve to connect other words, phrases, or sentences, for example “and, but, so, therefore”. Connecting phrases are multiple words that form a phrase to serve the same purpose like “in another matter, in addition, or from now on”. Conjunctions and connecting phrases are used frequently in letter-writing, and translating them well provides cohesion in the message and helps the target text to flow and be easily readable.

Just as in the case of other fixed expressions, it is common for connecting phrases to be translated too literally which causes the TT to be confusing or more difficult to understand. By improving our ability to translate conjunctions and connecting phrases into their equivalents in the target language, we increase the quality of our translations and the integrity of the message.
