Course Description: In this cultural immersion course, students will learn about contemporary Mexico and the current state of affairs in Mexican society through the exploration of news articles, documentary videos, editorial columns and other types of written and visual media in Spanish. We will also explore the life and work of some prominent writers, journalists, social movement leaders, politicians, and others who have contributed to defining Mexico in the 21st century.

As a group we will share presentations and engage in stimulating discussion, deepening our understanding of contemporary Mexican culture and the historical events that impact the country today.

This course is recommended for anyone with high intermediate to advanced Spanish skills with an interest in understanding Mexico and its people and gaining insight into the cultural background of Mexican immigrants in the U.S. The course will provide the opportunity to sharpen your ability to comprehend and express yourself in Spanish as we explore these complex issues in a complete Spanish immersion setting.

Best suited for: Students who’ve completed at least Spanish Intermediate 3 or equivalent
