Advanced Conversation: Cine mexicano

Course Description: In this highly interactive cultural immersion course, only offered once a year, students with advanced Spanish skills will enjoy watching  and having discussions about some of the best films produced in Mexican cinema during the 20th century. Covering a wide range of themes and periods, from the Golden Age of Mexican film in the 1940’s and ‘50’s to more modern films from the 1980’s and ‘90s, the films chosen for this course are widely regarded as among the best 100 films in Mexican cinema.

Analyzing these films will serve as a springboard from which students can reflect on diverse cultural attitudes and events that shaped modern Mexican society, as the themes explored and dialogues within each film reveal distinct cultural and historical perspectives. Generally each film will be viewed over the course of two class sessions so that there can be a balance of both viewing and lively class discussion. Analysis during class may include a review of the plot and characters, exploration of themes, symbolism, and meaning, impressions of the visual or filmmaking aspects of the films, discussion of new idiomatic expressions, and sharing of student’s opinions about and reactions to the films.

Viewing the films will give students the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the language as they enjoy the cinematic experience as group and become familiar with these memorable films that made their mark on Mexican cinema.

Prerequisites: Students who’ve previously completed Intermediate 6 or an Advanced course or been recommended an Advanced course.
